The frame material can be either aluminum or galvanized steel and utilizes the “staple-in” method of attaching fabric. With this awning system, fabric is taken directly from the roll and stapled into a channel which has been extruded into the tubing. A PVC or fabric covered PVC finishing trim is then inserted into the channel to provide corrosion protection and aesthetic appeal.

​Staple system awnings are perfect for back-lit applications. Signage on the awning is displayed during the day and night. Lighting is placed inside the awning frame or behind the fabric. Back-lit awnings and canopies are specially designed so that the shadows of the framework do not impede light transmission through the signage area. ​Well-designed fabric awnings and canopies impact building energy use tremendously and the benefits of fabric awnings go far beyond good looks.

​In a typical building, more energy is often lost through glass doors and windows than through any other part of the building. On hot days, more energy can come through one square foot of glass than through an entire insulated wall. The Suns radiation through glass is responsible for approximately about 20 % of the load on your air conditioner.

Window films and lightly tinted glass can effectively reduce some heat gain and sun glare but properly designed awnings will accomplish the same purpose and significantly increase energy saved over the film and tinted glass. Studies by the American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers show that during the period of the day when the sun shines directly on southern facing windows, a fabric awning reduces heat gain by 55 to 65 percent. For windows with western exposure, the reduction in heat gain is 72 to 77 percent.

Color choice and types of material are important energy-saving considerations. Awnings with low solar-absorbing surfaces (white) maintain temperatures closer to the outdoor air temperature. As a result, air temperature under the awnings isn’t raised appreciably. Awnings that absorb solar radiation (dark colors) may need to be vented to reduce radiation and heat build-up underneath the awning.
